As I Lay Dying - An Ocean Between
Us, Metal Blade Records
As I Lay Dying is back with a new album and what a record it is! This is
their most eclective album so far, also their heaviest and yet most refined record to
date. It's more metal, less hardcore breaks, more great guitar solos and still lots of
melodies. As I Lay Dying have added a lot of different elements to the melting-pot, like
thrash, death, some emo, some melodic metal, some metalcore. You can hear lots of fast
parts, some double bass, and a variety of vocal styles (from the harsh screams to clean
vocals). It's still As I Lay Dying as we got to know them through their previous
recordings, but it's even better and tighter. The band makes clever use of their two
guitarist, building up nice combinations of aggressive riffing and melodic strumming. The
extreme metal fans will probably dig songs like Comfort Betrays, Within Destruction and
Bury Us All more than the emo-oriented Forsaken or I Never Wanted (though these songs also
have the metal elements from the melting-pot, but the emphasis is on the emo element). The
Sound Of Truth may appeal to melodic metal fans. So, there's something for everyone.
Anyway, this is an awesome record you most certainly should check out! Listen to As I
