| 1993 - The third Believer album entitled Dimensions sees the light of
day. 2009 - The fourth Believer album entitled Gabriel comes out.
It's no surprise that things change over the years. How does time affect a band that's
been disbanded for almost a generation? I was rather suspicious about the Believer
comeback album. Many comeback bands have changed drastically to fit in with the new day
and age. Some changes are good, some aren't. First of all, Gabriel is clear evidence that
the guys are still able to pulling it off. Their three previous albums set the standard
high with excellent and technically challenging thrash metal. Dimensions also had its
classical music arrangements in the Trilogy Of Knowledge. On Gabriel the core members Kurt
Bachman (guitars and vocals) and Joey Daub (drums) show that they haven't lost their
ability to create high quality music, and they haven't lost their appetite for metal
either. Their fourth album begins with Medwton. The first twenty seconds have vague
background sounds, but when they're over, the thrash metal unleashes with fast tempos,
unusual but well chosen chords and Bachman's raw shouting. Best example of what Believer
can deliver nowadays, is probably History Of Decline with great riffs and pounding rhythms
that will blow away all the cobwebs from your Believer CD collection. Focused Lethality is
quite well too. The band still has violin playing (played by Scott Laird), but this is
only one small contribution. Believer does more with keyboards and voice tracks woven
through the music. Sometimes that sounds pretty cool. In other cases it can be annoying
(Stoned). The album ends with Freedom. Listening to this song is like going up to the
attic. You can hear all sorts of weird sounds, voice tracks, violin playing,
bleeping and discarded riffs you may have heard earlier on. It's a potpourri of
sounds without an obvious structure to give them substance. Total freedom of sound. I
prefer the first nine songs on the album though. Believer is back like they've never done
anything else. |
