Callisto - Providence, Fullsteam Records
The release of a new Callisto album is always an event to look out for.
Prepare yourselves for surprises as no album from this Finnish band is a copy of its
predecessor. The music is always evolving. Providence is definitely another step forward.
From the very first song it's clear what the major change is. Callisto has a new singer
and he does sing a lot. He adds new fibre to this already well established band. His
vocals are clean, which is a nice contrast compared to the old singer who is still in the
band and can be heard occassionally with his harsh screams. Newcomer Jani Ala-Hukkala is a
good singer, whose voice meshes well with the music. He has a warm and sometimes
melancholic tone. Though I had to get used to him for a short while as the previous album
Noir was almost instrumental, Ala-Hukkala proves to be a great addition. I was afraid
Callisto was going to be softer, sound wise, as the softer parts became more prominent on
the last album. Providence shows there's no need to worry. Callisto still provides a very
rousing and intense atmospheric rock sound with frequent outbursts. Just listen to great
songs like In Session, Statis and the title track. It's not metalcore, nor extreme metal,
but overwhelming in any sense. But also the more ambient songs are worth the while. Add to
that retro sounds and dark soundscapes, and the many additional instruments
(including mandolin, flute and trumpet) and you get an idea of what Callisto is
about. This is doomy, intense, melancholic. This is Callisto. I love it! The
album has ten tracks that fill 68 minutes. Need more persuasion? |
