Codigo Eterno - Codigo Eterno, Independent/Youngside Records

Seldomly I've heard an independent release that sounded as professional as this debut album from Honduras. Though the music is a bit softer than what I normally review, this CD is worth mentioning. Codigo Eterno is a female fronted melodic rock band with Spanish lyrics. You won't even find a word English in the beautifully designed booklet. But it's not an entirely Latin American effort. Several guests helped making this album, including Andreas Olsson (Narnia) who played all bass parts, Rui Prado (Kleisband) who did the drumming on eight of the ten songs, and Markus Sigfridsson (Harmony) who played a guitar solo. And there are five more guests. This album is probably not a very good representation of the band Codigo Eterno itself. It makes you wonder why photos of the neatly dressed band members are printed in the booklet, as the musicians among them hardly did anything. But, nevermind, the music counts! Codigo Eterno was formed by guitarist Jean Funes who originally wanted to do an instrumental album. Later on it was decided to add vocals. His wife Beatriz Aranda and Cesia Acosta are great singers. Funes is a good song writer who also produced this album with lightfooted, melodic and poppy rock songs. Solo Tu starts like an Evanescence ballad but gets heavier, almost like a lighter version of The Gathering. Quite good is Misterio with nice vocal layers. The ethereal parts of Estar Junto A Ti and the catchy chorus make this track definitely a highlight. More along the lines of straightforward rock is Promesa, sung by a male guest singer (Luis Rios). The production and the sound quality are far above what I've expected from a CD from Honduras. Good rock stuff. Codigo Eterno is proof that third world countries can deliver high quality music as well. A welcome surprise. I play Estar Junto A Ti again, press the repeat button and turn up the volume!
