Coriolis - Coriolis, PsychoAcoustiX Records
This debut album dates from 2005. It's a one man effort. Coriolis is
Jonathan Stamets (also known from Bridgeshadows) who did all the instruments and the
singing on this record. The music is a mix of keyboard gothic and metal with electronic
elements. Most of the songs have a dark and sometimes even depressing sound. This is
partly due to the vocals, though they are not of the screaming sort, they are dark, raw
and sometimes quite low and as a whisper. They fit this kind of music perfectly, but could
be a bit more convincing at times. If you listen to the latest Bridgeshadows album, you
can hear Stamets has improved his vocal abilities (and recorded them better). Metal fans
will probably think the electronic and keyboard elements are too dominant on this album:
Happy Days starts as if it's a Joy Electric tune. But the guitar sound is quite good and
some ideas are interesting, like the whistling in Hypothetical Life. Occasionally Coriolis
reminds of a lighter and less impressive version of Rammstein, with a hint of The
Awakening (Resurrection Night). But it's not of the same level. Only a few songs are
promises for the future, the rest is not warming my heart. If his work with Bridgeshadows
is an indication of what Stamets is capable of, I'm sure we'll see Coriolis develop
further with a next album. Listen to Coriolis on myspace.com. This album is
distributed in the USA by Youngside Records. |
