Fort Knox Amsterdam - Demo 2008, Independent

Line

After a sabbatical year the Dutch rock band Fort Knox Amsterdam returns with a new line-up and a new demo. Most important change to the band is TJ Knox. He used to play guitar only. Now he is the main vocalist for the group. This has a significant influence on the band sound. Fort Knox Amsterdam's previous CD, the Wake Up EP (2006), featured a mix of ska, rock, hardcore and some thrash. Vocally, the old singer G-Dok had a rapping sort of vocal delivery. TJ is a different vocalist. He is a clean, melodic singer that would fit in with a melodic rock band easily. There are also some screams on this demo, though they're neither harsh nor bold nor agressive. They sound rather funny, although I doubt that's intended. Also musically a lot has changed. The ska is gone. Even so, this demo sounds mellower than the Wake Up EP. The prominent hardcore elements have disappeared. What remains is a mix of punk, melodic rock and a kind of thrashy rock (Glorious Dead). The production of this disc isn't as good as the EP, but this is demo stuff. It's still very acceptable. The song writing is good. The third track, Kind Of Man I Am, is possibly the most attractive song on the demo with its uptempo parts and slower moments. I wish the screams were a bit more convincing though. The demo ends with a reggae song that sounds out of place. With five songs this recording is a fairly good impression of what Fort Knox Amsterdam is about these days.
