Illuminandi - In Via, Ars/Mundi/Independent

More than three years elapsed since the release of the Illumina Tenebras
Meas EP (2006). Little was heard from this Polish band, but Illuminandi didn't sit still
as is obvious on their first real full length album In Via. The group developed their
sound, making In Via more consistent sound wise than the EP and the 2005 album The
Beginning with its assorted demo tracks and live recordings. What they offer now is a mix
of metal (with clean vocals and grunts and growls), classical music, rock and folk music.
The outcome is in fact a great surprise. The songs are constructed much better than before
with lots of interesting arrangements, sounds and ideas. And to make it even better, the
production is great! The guitar sound, the violin, the cello, the flute, the bass and all
the other instruments sound so well! Illuminandi definitely outdid themselves this time.
It's hard to pick out the best songs from the album, as there are many great tunes,
including Poczelkalnia, the folkish Illumina Tenebras Meas and W Drodze. And I shouldn't
forget the closing song A Blessing with its gentle sounds and heavier passages. A worthy
ending to a first class album. |
