Kekal - The Habit Of Fire, Whirlwind Records
I remember getting acquainted with the music of this Indonesian group
back in 2002. At the time they got signed to the Dutch company Fear Dark. Kekal was still
an extreme metal band with black metal roots. Someone who wants to relive that past,
should ignore The Habit Of Fire (2007). There's only thirty seconds, or less, of black
metal fury on this album. Even the pure metal sound is scarce. That doesn't have to be a
problem when you're openminded. Kekal experiments with different styles, including
progressive rock, fusion, rap and industrial. This avantgarde rock/metal has its own
merits. The band presents a collage of sounds, reminiscent of Altera Enigma at times.
(Altera Enigma is a project from Kekal singer/guitarist Jeff with two other fellows who
also contributed to The Habit Of Fire). Some of this stuff is quite enjoyable. I only
can't stand the clean vocals from Jeff. He sounds weak when he's doing higher notes. A
pity. The die-hard metal fan will be disappointed anyway, but should find some nice
moments still. Like the blistering guitar solo on Isolated I. As it comes to the sound
quality and mix, this album is probably Kekal's best record to date. |
