Lo-Ruhamah - The Glory Of God, Bombworks Records
The first full-length album from Lo-Ruhamah is a sonic experience. The
Glory Of God contains seven tracks. The opening track is two minutes, but the rest varies
from almost seven minutes to twelve minutes. Under this condition it's evidently
impossible to write songs with head and tail, encompassing the usual structure like
verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus or similar schemes. Instead of this, you'll hear a
sequence of sounds, some heavy, others more gentle, some raw, some melodic. The reflective
lyrics are inspired by philosophy, quoting philosophers like Kierkegaard and Sartre.
Musically the tracks are intense and filled with different sounds. Basically Lo-Ruhamah
mixes death metal with black metal. You can hear occasional double bass parts and fast
beats, but also slower parts and mellow intermezzos. Sometimes the music reminds of old
Lengsel (Solace era). The vocals (both shrieking as grunting) are used in a fashion so
that they become part of the sound. Some clean vocals sound fragile. Sometimes the band is
repeating riffs too often, without building in some progression to come to a climax.
Unfortunately this is not a CD fitted for radio airplay, considering the length of the
tunes. A pity. The chrystal clear production almost makes it possible to get an image of
the band playing. A good step forward compared to their EP. A song like Torrents sounds
promising. |
