Luther-N - Dogmatics, Youngside Records
If the first two minutes of an album are decisive when listening to it in
a store, hard music fans will stay away from this release. The combination with the
computer-made image will be enough to discourage any headbanger. First track, first two
minutes: It starts with a triphop beat, plastic keyboard sounds and listless male singing.
And I thought: I'm not reviewing this crap, this isn't Art For The Ears stuff. But I was
wrong. Luther-N is a new band formed by Shane Sowers, who was previously known for Junker
Jorg. With his newest band he blends keyboard rock with metal and modern rock. The first
track, The Atonement, is not bad when the guitars are finally added and gets better to the
end. A more straightforward approach has the next song, Rest In Peace, which sounds quite
nice with a heavy guitar riff in the verses, some acid sounds here and there, and a good
chorus. The vocals are better now too, still clear, but rawer. This song is much more
representative for the rest of Dogmatics. Sometimes a song is more metal oriented,
sometimes more along the lines modern rock. And the amount of programming various with
each song. A bit different is The Table, which is a rapcore song with hardcorerap vocals
and a heavy guitar riff accompanying it. The album ends with Reformation, which is one of
the heavier tracks. Luther-N is, despite the doubtful first impression, not a bad new
band. There are some solos, the band has good ideas implemented, and there's variety. Even
the drum machine is quite acceptable. Next time start with a more appropriate song,
please! Listen to Luther-N on myspace.com |
