Manufraqture - In Spite,
Independent/Youngside Records
Manufraqture comes from Chicago and In Spite (2007) is their second
album. The music of this group is a melting pot of different styles, but it could be
described as an industrial metal sound. In Spite has more variety than such a description
might suggest. For example, there's an amalgam of synthopop and hardcore rap in Ready To
Face. Powerful riffing and beats can be heard in MasQuerade Ball. Much more pop oriented
is DarQ Angel with its gentler rock sounds in the beginning and a second half with a
repeated chorus that you can scream along so nicely. The massive attack of acid sounds,
pounding rhythms, drill riffing and screams in Ill Bleed You take a heavy toll on your ear
drums. Especially In Your Eyes is more in the atmospheric rock direction. It sounds like a
Fire Fly/Exoria song at first. The album ends with two live tracks, the first of which
could have been left out. Poor quality. The second is the live version of DarQ Angel,
noteworthy for its chorus. The melting pot of In Spite is filled with metal, hardcore,
acid house, techno, industrial, voice samples, rap and rock. Clean vocals and screams are
used from time to time. I haven't reviewed many albums in the industrial metal direction,
so I'm not supposed to be an expert. The better tracks on this album are quite
overpowering. All the time you hear new things, making it an interesting experience. The
production is quite good. Sometimes it could be a bit more catchy, but a song like
FriQtion has a good bit of everything: It's heavy, melodic, and is catchy. Listen to
