Mena Brinno - Wicked Polly, Dark Balance
Mena Brinno was established by former members of extreme metal band Royal
Anguish. Their debut album Icy Muse appeared in 2007. Wicked Polly is the follow-up that
will come out on February 2nd 2009. Musically this group combines classic heavy metal with
folk elements (mostly flute sounds in many of the songs). But most charachteristic for
Mena Brinno is female singer Katy Decker. She was classically schooled as an opera singer.
And that's apparant when you listen to Wicked Polly. She's a soprano that can sing very
high. Just listen to songs like Entrapment and Secrets Of War. But I like her lower tones
better. Though she's definitely an excellent singer, it's still a matter of taste whether
you like it or not. I had to get used to her. Her vocals are rather overemphasized at
times too, while the rest of the band is buried under her vocal layers. The music is old
school melodic metal that sounds well done, but not very original. In fact, there are a
few moments that sound very familiar, like something I've heard from a different source.
Mena Brinno does know how to put together a song, making Wicked Polly an overall pleasant
experience. With a better, heavier, mix and a bit more innovation, they might conquer the
world. |
