My Silent Wake - The Anatomy Of
Melancholy, Bombworks Records
It seems My Silent Wake is doubling their musical effort with each
release. After an EP they released a full album. And now they've doubled the album with
their third piece of doom metal. Doom/death fans who were not convinced by Shadow Of
Sorrow, the previous record, should check out this double CD. This is, undoubtedly, the
best album from this group. The first disc contains the doomy death metal they're known
for. But the songs are better than the average track on Shadow Of Sorrow, and the
production makes this record a very nice experience: from the melodic doom in The Dying
Thing We're Living For to the black metal influenced Into Silence. It's not only slow
tempos that this album has to offer. At times the speed goes up. One of my favorite tracks
is Heretic (more than eleven minutes long), with an acoustic guitar playing in the
beginning, while an electric guitar wails along. Later, the full force of My Silent Wake
is felt with haunting guitar sounds and a huge wall of sound. The song also has variety,
like a mellow intermezzo and another impressive break. The second disc contains acoustic
music with medieval and folk influences. One of these songs is dedicated to Tim Cooper
(1969-2006), who played in Ashen Mortality. With the remaining members of this band, My
Silent Wake was formed. As I'm not really familiar with this type of music, I will only
say there are some nice songs, like Look Beyond The Flesh, Look Beyond The Mind, and
Oceans Of Time with their medieval sounds, and A Photograph, with a "heavier"
sound. Overall, this disc is a nice extra to listen to and relax. The first disc is a doom
metal masterpiece. For me, as a deejay, it's a real pity the song's are so long! |
