Narnia - Course Of A Generation, Massacre Records
A lot has happened since Narnia appeared in the late nineties. They've
strayed away from their neo-classical metal starting point. With their new album the most
noteworthy change is that singer and band founder Christian Liljegren/Rivel left the group
to pursue other interests. He was replaced by Germán Pascual. The new vocalist has a
rawer singing style than Liljegren, though in a few songs he comes close to the original
singer. His range varies from mid range to high, but he doesn't do high pitched notes that
Liljegren occasionally did (for instance on the live album At Short Notice). The melodic
metal from Narnia has thrashy leanings in some songs, like the opener Sail Around The
World and especially the title track. There are also songs with progressive metal
elements. Most of the time keyboards only have a sustaining role. The focus is definitely
on the heavy guitar riffing. One of the highlights is Rain with a chorus that'll get you
hooked up. The album ends with a more than worthy piece called Behind The Curtain, with
nice vocal layers in the end. Old band, new singer, yet old fashioned quality. |
