Pain Remains - Identity,
Bullroser Records
The world of music will not change through Pain Remains. That's clear
after the first listening session. This band has nothing to offer that hasn't been done
before. But let me do them justice. Their disc remains in my player longer than one
listening session as they've invested in quality. Pain Remains is a melodic hardcore
band from Finland. Most of the songs display the two guitar approach: One guitarist plays
the rhythm parts, the other the melody. However, the booklet only mentions one guitarist,
which makes it hard to pull this material off live. A bio of the band indicates there's a
second guitarist. I hope the latter is true because this use of two guitars make the music
so much more enjoyable. Pain Remains has powerful rhythms with lots of fast tempos and
occasional breaks. But the melody makes it all friendlier, catchier and gives you an
energy boost. The screaming vocals are raw but understandable. Sometimes there's a touch
of metal and some songs are more aggressive (Sick Of You) or slower (the distorted
Never Forget). The production is good with a great guitar sound. Identity is an album a US
label shouldn't be ashamed of bringing out. This is music to get up on your feet and shout
along with those gang vocal moments. Melodic hardcore fans should check this band out.
Listen to songs like Tuli On, Nowhere and Forthcoming Threat (with three guitar layers at
one point) and convince yourself. Pain Remains may not change the world of music, but they
certainly brighten up a hardcore day. Listen to Pain Remains on myspace.com. In the USA this
album is distributed by Youngside Records. |
