Saint - Crime Scene Earth, Independent
Saint is a band that goes back a long time. First there was a group
called Gentiles and then, in 1982, Saint was started. Throughout the eighties the band
recorded three CD's with dark heavy metal. Then Saint broke up. Since the late nineties
the band is getting back. First with a different singer. In 2003 original singer Josh
Kramer rejoined the band. He's now one of the three members who were in Saint in the
eighties (along with band founder and bassist Richard Lynch and guitarist Dee Harrington).
Crime Scene Earth is the third album he did with the reunited Saint and the follow-up to
The Mark (2006). Saint in 2008 has a lot in common with the old band. Still they play
eighties heavy metal. It's not the kind of poppy hair metal Stryper once produced, but
much darker. Darker riffs, darker sounds and a darker vocal approach. Fans of old Saint
may be surprised though. Josh Kramer adopted a new vocal style on Crime Scene Earth. He is
doing more of a screaming vocal style. I have to get used to this. A pity, as the vocal
style he always did (as could still be heard on The Mark) would fit better. But the music
makes up a lot. The song the album opens with, Half Times A Measure, is a good, dark metal
tune. Pretty cool is Lost, though the song would have been twice as good with Josh
Kramer's old vocal style. This old style can yet be heard in the song Invader (a Judas
Priest cover). Crime Scene Earth has good stuff. But I still prefer the previous album,
and Saint's eighties records. |
