Sáwol - Through Soil And Skin, Bullroser Records
Sáwol is a new band from Finland (formed in 2005) playing doomy death
metal. If you remember the Norwegian bands Schaliach and Groms, you can consider Sáwol
then as a crossing of the two, with the addition of new elements. The music has the fat
guitar sound and the deep growling of Groms and the lighter and doomier tendencies of
Schaliach with some well played, gloomy guitar solos. Sáwol has more atmospheric elements
though than the aforementioned bands. This atmosphere is created by the guitars, not by
keyboards. It's dark music, sometimes with a melancholic or even depressive feel to it.
The pictures of trees in the fog printed in the booklet fit perfectly the feel of Through
Soil And Skin. One of the better tracks is Prisoner, especially those parts in which the
band adds impressive sound scapes with their lead guitar playing. Very atmospheric, but
still sounding brutal. The best song is perhaps Seasons with different sounds, also very
atmospheric and heavy. Another great track is Closer To The Sun with some clean vocals.
This is an album for fans who believe extreme metal can be both heavy and beautiful. The
production is of high quality and even the booklet was designed with care, though the
printed words are hard to read for old guys like me. Do I need glasses? How depressing! You can listen to Sáwol on myspace.com. The Eminent Storm is distributed in the USA by Youngside Records. |
