Silence The Foe - Shaking
Hallelujah, Guideline Records
It's almost like a culture shock to hear this album. I only got to know
Silence The Foe through their debut EP When Summer Turns To Sand (released in 2001). Back
then they played metalcore. What I hear on Shaking Hallelujah is nothing of the sort. This
is music with different elements melted together. It has something of hardcore, punk rock
and something of straight forward rock 'n roll, and a lot of frantic noises. But the end
result is none of these. What a potpourri of sounds! Vocally you can hear clean vocals as
well as shrill screams. The lyrics are short, but there's a lot of repetition. What
strikes me is the nice mix of the album. You can hear all the instruments very well. This
is essential, as Silence The Foe has seven members, including three guitarist (though one
of them does keyboards and piano as well), a drummer, percussionist and, of course, a
bassist. Some of the tracks are a bit weird, like Take It! Tap It! and Evel Knievel (which
sounds like a song played reverse). But there are also beautiful rock songs. Take for
instance Perplexed In A Labyrinth, with its driving rock sound. This album may be a shock
to me, but at least it's a pleasant one. |
