The Rick Ray Band - Violence
Marred By Peace, Neurosis Records
If there's an award for most singular album title, then The Rick Ray Band
will surely win it this year. Violence Marred By Peace is the newest record from this
seventies rock band. The most obvious change compared to the previous album (Nothing To
Lose) is the addition of Gery Riva to the line-up. The band always had Rick Schultz
playing clarinet, sax and oboe. He's still in the band, but Gery Riva blows a few pipes
now as well. His instruments are trumpet and trombone. This obviously influenced the band
sound. You can hear it when the first track starts. Schultz and Riva dominate the sound,
while guitar has lost its leading role. Violence Marred By Peace still sounds like vintage
Rick Ray music, but is now way too mellow for Art For The Ears. However, this is probably
the best album from the group. They improved the sound quality of their recordings the
last few years and the compositions on this new disc are some of the most interesting so
far. The opening track is a nice start. But even better is Among The Fire with a real nice
melody line throughout the song. With over ten minutes, this track isn't what I call radio
friendly though. Fifty Thousand Volts, Matthew and Fan The Flames are heavier then most of
the album. Two instrumental tracks give some further variety. Yeah, too soft, too lengthy
songs, but nonetheless the best CD so far. Listen to The Rick Ray Band on myspace. |
